Abstract
This article examines the participation of the UN’s Scandinavian observer force in the Israeli-Arab conflict during the period preceding the Sinai War. The author explores the role undertaken by the peacekeeping forces, offering a nuanced perspective to augment the existing literature on the UN observers’ activities in the conflict’s initial years. The article commences with an examination of the Nordic peacekeeping model and its influence on Scandinavian engagement in the Middle East. Subsequently, it delves into the historical context in the early involvement of Scandinavian countries in the conflict. The article specifically concentrates on the border incidents between Israel and Egypt, tracing the sequence of events leading to the 1956 war. The empirical aspect of this study relies on primary sources from Israel, encompassing official documents and diplomatic reports, supplemented by the testimony found in the diary of the commander of the Israeli-Egyptian Armistice Committee, kept in an archive in Denmark..
