Abstract
Background and Purpose: In light of the events of October 7, and the prolonged and multifaceted exposure of individuals and families to extreme events and the subsequent post-traumatic distress, it is crucial to examine systematically the bidirectional effects of the distress on couples’ relationships. Furthermore, it is essential to offer couple-informed interventions that consider both the impact on the couple’s dynamic and the potential of intimate partners to serve as sources of support and aid in the recovery process. Methods: A narrative review of the research literature on the implications of post-traumatic distress in couples’ relationships was used to map the emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological aspects of couples’ experiences. At the same time, studies suggesting the transmission of positive changes and growth were presented.Findings: The findings suggest a bidirectional perspective—examining how the post-traumatic distress of the affected individual impacts their partner, while also considering the partners’ potential role in the recovery process. Most research focuses on the negative consequences of such events. There is a lack of information on gender and cultural differences among couples following exposure to traumatic events, as well as on dyadic coping when both partners experience post-traumatic distress. There are various ways to involve partners in post-trauma interventions, ranging from psycho education to couple therapy.Implications for Practice: It is essential to examine the impact of post-trauma tic distress on couples in general, and particularly during ongoing military crises. It is important to understand the strengths and resources available to couples and to expand the range of interventions through a relational and family-oriented perspective.
