Abstract

The army's policy in Israel regarding women has changed a lot in the last two decades and is being challenged from different directions. In 2017, for example, the proportion of women who volunteered for combat duties was the highest in years, however, at the same time, the opening of combat roles to women and the abolition of gender segregation in military courses arouse strong opposition within and outside the army. The army's gender regime is no longer a uniform and coherent structure as it was in the past; It is a dynamic field operating under the influence of opposing forces and it affects not only women but also men and perceptions of masculinity in the military.
Therefore, the basic assumption of the book Gender at the Base: Women and Men in the Military Service is that the army is a heterogeneous organization; An organization that has different shows of gender equality and inequality in different arenas and it manages multi-faceted relations with civil society. The articles in this collection no longer treat men and women as uniform social categories, but examine the meaning of military service for different groups serving in different roles. They deal with the overt and covert manifestations of gender inequality in the military, examine the intersection between gender, class, ethnicity and religion in the military organization, and present the possibility of bargaining with the military organization and even opposing it.
The organizational changes that took place in the army in Israel and the theoretical perspectives that expanded over time led to the development of a vibrant and intensive field of research concerning the army and gender in Israel. However, in this book, for the first time, prominent writers in the field, researchers from various fields of knowledge - sociology, anthropology, political science, gender studies, cultural studies, cinema and literature - are gathered together. The collection unfolds a wide variety of articles organized around four themes that make up the book's covers: military identities; the gender policy in the army; the relationship between the military and the family; and opposition to war and occupation in Israel today.
