Abstract

Background: Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology that simulates artificial environments in a three-dimensional and interactive manner. The immersive experience gives users the sensation of physically being present within the simulated environment. Over the past decade, VR has been widely used in education, training, leisure, and entertainment, due to its ability to replicate complex scenarios and evoke natural, realistic responses from users. These features have led to a growing interest in its application in the field of mental health.Aim: To review the existing knowledge on the use of VR in mental health, including its development, areas of application, theoretical foundations, future potential, and current challenges.Method and findings: A focused narrative review was conducted based on a systematic search across major databases including Scopus, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, SAGE Journals Online, JSTOR, and ProQuest. The review included empirical studies, literature reviews, and theoretical articles published between2005 and 2025. Findings indicate that VR contributes to a range of therapeutic goals, including exposure to phobias, emotional regulation, psycho education, and social skills. The review highlights the technology’s potential to support therapeutic processes, while also noting ethical and methodological challenges that require further investigation. Implications: VR offers a personalized, interactive, and safe therapeutic platform. Its integration into clinical practice could improve treatment adherence and reduce avoidance behaviors. However, implementation demands professional training, clear therapeutic protocols, ethical oversight, and continued research.
