In recent decades, Ladino, the language of the deportees from Spain, has undergone many transformations in Israel. Ladino, argues Shmuel Raphael, experienced a cultural revival. The small discourse community that many predicted would disappear in the near future, became an important aspect in the heritage of the 'Ladinos', the descendants of the Sephardic Jews and in many ways not only in their heritage, but in Israeli culture as a whole.
