Abstract

In recent decades, Ladino, the language of the deportees from Spain, has undergone many transformations in Israel. Ladino, argues Shmuel Raphael, experienced a cultural revival. The small discourse community that many predicted would disappear in the near future, became an important aspect in the heritage of the 'Ladinos', the descendants of the Sephardic Jews and in many ways not only in their heritage, but in Israeli culture as a whole. "Ladino here and now" seeks to examine the changing trend in the field of Ladino and its culture in Israel. In its thirteen chapters, the interface between Ladino culture and Israeli society is examined. Who are the 'Ladinos' and what is their attitude to the cultural heritage of their parents? Is the cultural heritage of the Ladino language and culture a "historical embalmed" - a nostalgic relic of a past that has lost its vitality - or a living force through which the past not only survives, but also influences the present? These questions are examined in the light of the surprising expressions of Ladino vitality in Israeli society
