Abstract

The purpose of the book is to offer an alternative to the Jewish population that is on the seam between religiosity and secularism. The religious-secular dichotomy is no longer relevant to some groups in Israeli society: many are interested in observing mitzvot and continuing the tradition, but are at a loss when faced with the Halacha and its meticulous sections. They shy away from the introduction of Halacha into all aspects of life, and try to find their way to their own subjective religiosity.

The book discusses the possibility of observing mitzvot in a softer way than the halachic one, and offers a bold model of Judaism that is continuous between halachic law and secularism. This new consciousness breaks the boundaries of the accepted religious consciousness of the believer subject to the divine and halachic decree. The author, who refers to issues such as Shabbat and kosher, suggests observing mitzvot with thought and awareness, in accordance with the modern era. With a critical eye, he tries to deal with a variety of issues that are on the agenda in Israeli society: the status of women, faith, atheism, prayer, the issue of conversion and more. In an original and contemporary voice, the author tries to offer a kind of manifesto for living a new faith lifestyle out of love for people, broad horizons and a sober view of contemporary reality.

The second part of the book is structured as free musings: short essays written by the author over twenty years, which reflect his personal world, which constantly moves between halachic religiosity and modern liberalism.
