Abstract

Numerous questions have arisen regarding the nature of current political education, particularly concerning the extent to which educational teams in formal and informal settings avoid engaging with politically volatile friction points. Consequently, significant criticism has emerged about the costs of this avoidance and the importance of equipping young people with critical socio-political knowledge. Based on the understanding that civic literacy and democratic education encourage the development of social skills and prevent social exclusion and racism, this qualitative research examines the motivation for active civic engagement among young people who participated in protests against the judicial overhaul. The qualitative study is based on focus groups and interviews with young activists and engaged individualsaged 17-24, conducted in two phases, the first of which occurred during the protestperiod, and the second of which took place after October 7, 2023, to examinedifferences in their civic involvement. The research findings indicate the importance of political education with an emphasis on civic literacy and democratic education ineducational spaces and define protest spaces as safe training grounds for young people to experience activism.
