Abstract

This paper describes a section of an art therapy clinical training model, developed at the Academic College of Society and the Arts. This model is based on a transformative learning approach -oscillating from experiential learning to theory, and then back again. The model is based on transitions between a supervision group focusing on understanding the client's therapeutic process and a processing group aiming at the development of the therapist. This is a model of co-facilitation across time and space, with the same group transitioning between a supervision class led by one facilitator and a processing group led by the other. The paper describes the components of co-facilitation, the structure and characteristics of each course and the transitions and interactions between them, enabling the development of the students' professional identity, which involves their personal creative language and understanding of clients' influence on their development. Finally, the paper suggests possible research directions, following the observational reflections on this model, in attempt to conceptualize the components of transformative learning in art therapists' training. This is particularly focused on the connection between understanding the therapeutic processes of the client in art therapy and the evolving processes of the emerging art therapist.
