Abstract

This qualitative research study examines ultra-Orthodox women in a course granting them a BA in education from a secular college. In the study, an initially technical and instrumental process emerged as one that, under certain conditions, ultimately affected the entirety of the students’ various identities. Throughout their learning process, these students face contradictions between contemporary reality – conveyed in academic language foreign to them – and the ultra-Orthodox world. The encounter between these clashing and often contradictory spaces produces multifaceted resistance that testifies to the degree of the women’s access to power, support, and resources, and that may serve to forge their multifaceted identities.
