Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to examine the effect of participation in a sports training course on personality variables amongst dropout youngsters. The course for General Sports Instructors has been given at the Wingate Institute since 1974, providing graduates with opportunities for social and professional mobility and for serving the community as sports instructors. A review of the research literature has indicated that there is a positive relationship between excelling at sports and high social status, and between engaging in sports and self-image, responsibility and social interactions. Both delinquency and sports provide relief from stress and tension by enhanced physical activity that releases aggression and physical and mental energy. In addition, both allow the exhibiting of achievements that can enhance personal and social status. In this study the assumption that participating in sports will increase the participants' self-esteem and enhance their locus of control was examined. The assumption was examined using questionnaires, which were given to the trainees (N=26) and to a contrast group (N=21) which consisted of graduates of the course (N=36). The findings confirm the assumptions and indicate that sports has the potential to advance those who participate in it in the areas examined.
