Abstract
Ronit Bacher Shahar's book of poems, Mother, includes the moving play of theextremely difficult relationship between a Holocaust survivor mother and her daughter. Distress, hostility, and closeness are intertwined. The complexity of therelationship inspires complicated feelings of guilt and deep questions about theidentity of the narrator . This article seeks to trace the multifaceted mechanisms used in the mother-daughter relationship, including violence, attempts at silencing, andrebellion against these devices – the most prominent expression of which is the defiant depiction in language of experiences that have not been recounted for many years.The article deals with the unique language of the witness, the form of her testimony,as well as her silence.
