Facebook parent community leaders establish and lead online support communities that empower and connect parents. These communities provide informational and social support to a large number of parents. In the age of social media, industry organizations are recruiting people for community management positions, and academic institutions are offering community management programs and courses. This growing interest in community management highlights the need to understand what motivates individuals to take on these roles, both volunteer and paid. In this study, 160 Facebook parent community leaders (administrators) were compared to 393 parent community members (N=553), in order to identify differences in personality traits (narcissism, altruism, self-control, and grit) and demographic characteristics (age and number of children). Parent community leaders exhibited significantly higher levels of narcissism, altruism, and self-control, as well as higher levels of perseverance in their efforts. However, there was no significant difference in consistency of interest. Parent community leaders were also older and had more children than parent community members.
