Abstract

The article puts the spotlight on the gender and vulnerable aspects of our work with girls and young women. The article addresses hook-up practices at nightclubs and parties that youth and young adults hang out at. Employing semi-structured interviews with young women, the article presents the contradictory dynamic encountered by young women with respect to their sexual development; on the one hand, they are supposed to be "modest" and refrain from exploring their sexuality, but at the same time, they are supposed to discover themselves and to be in control of their sexual aspirations. Based on recurring themes in the interviews with them, author Rachel Levi Herz proposes three educational principles tohelp adolescent girls contend with the conflicting messages and with their confusing and sometimes harsh experiences, and to develop a healthier perception of sexuality, individuality, and the female collective.
