Abstract

In this paper we present a pragmatic analysis of two conversations in John Grisham's The Runaway Jury facework of the interlocutors. We further compare the English source and its Hebrew translation, focusing on the translation shifts that may affect his positioning in the target text compared to the source text The examination of translation shifts indicates that the speakers' second-order positioning is only partly affected by local shifts. We argue that first-order positioning in institutional settings may reduce the influence of facework on second order positioning and compensate for shifts in translation. (From the article)
