Abstract
Emergencies, which raise the need for survival, encourage community intervention. Non formal education (NFE) initiatives were initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet individual and community needs. In the 2021NFE Conference at the Ono Academic College, 32 such initiatives competed for the Non formal Education during COVID-19 Award. This study was designed to learn the characteristics of these projects, propose a typology, and examine community intervention along two axes – change and empowerment. Qualitative tools were used to examine the research question: an online qualitative questionnaire, information gathered at meetings, candidates’ self-reports,and peer evaluation. The findings classify the initiatives into four types of intervention – community development, community planning, social action, and social reform – and distinguish between initiatives immediate-needs initiatives and future-oriented ones. The findings revealed that all initiatives empowered participants, regardless of the degree of community participation. Conclusionsc all for expanding the discourse regarding the boundaries of NFE and its role in the community in routine and emergency times, and recognizing NFE’s organizational uniqueness and pedagogical flexibility. We recommend outlining educational policies to expand NFE and make it accessible during routine and emergency times to all of Israeli society
