Abstract

This article addresses rhetorical strategies and linguistic-rhetoricalcharacteristics in the discourse of sermonic classes delivered by rabbaniot to female audiences. The study examines sermonic classes of twelve Orthodox rabbaniot who deliver them regularly. The participants includenon-Hassidic ultra-Orthodox rabbaniot, Torah-oriented national-religiousrabbaniot, and Sephardic-strengthening rabbaniot – from three Orthodox-Jewish movements – who have become local leaders, are highly admired and serve as role models.The most prominent strategy observed is creating the sense of a women's community, accomplished by referencing shared activities taking place within the classes or outside of them, by addressing the women as asingle unit with similar desires and interests, by using many utterances that describe the feminine experience and by empowering women using a varietyof means.The rhetorical strategies of the rabbaniot were also examined in the context of their associated Orthodox Jewish ideological movements.
