As a geochemist, I am interested in all aspects of fluxes of material between different earthly reservoirs. During my early career, as a research student, I mainly did magmatic geochemistry and petrology, focusing on provenance of magmas, composition of their deep sources and magmatic processes en route to the surface. The main model was published in J. Petrology (2006), promoting the concept of veined lithosphere melting, which is now widely accepted and cited. 

Since my post-doc at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (1998-2000), I am mainly engaged in marine chemistry and groundwater investigation, focusing on fluxes and resience times in reservoirs. This includes fluxes at oceanic cold seeps (eg. Pacific Northwest), Submarine (and sub-lacustrine) Groudnwater Discharge (SGD), seawater and lake water circulation in aquifers, C export from surface water to the Deep sea, shelf-open sea transport processes and deep groundwater (incl. brines) residence times. Major part of my group's work is dedicated to the High Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, where we study both permafrost prcesses (aggregation, thawing and internal fluid migration) and sub-permafrost groundwater.

My lab is a radio-isotope environmental lab, occupying a variety of alpha, beta and gamma detectors, which are mainly aimed at radio-nuclides of the U-Th decay chains as environmental tracers. We also operated the marine station DeepLev at the deep eastern Mediterranean, which traces a variety of physical, cehmical and biological aspects of the ultra-oligotrophic Levantine Basin, offshore Israel.

Current Projects

  • the discharge of deep hydrothermal groundwater and history of stratification of the kille lake Lake Kivu (Rwanda/Congo)
  • fluxes and mechanisms of transport between shelf and the open Sea at the eastern Mediterranean Sea
  • residence times and methane fluxes in sub-permafrost groundwater, and the history of permafrost conntinuity in the high Arctic of Svalbard
