About Me

Research Areas:

  • Ethnic and Religious Identites in Cotemporary China
  • Church and state realtions in China
  • Buddhist and Daoist Philosophy

My research concerns ethnic and religious identity in China in the global era - in the movement of religions, ideas and people in different spaces in the past and especially today, in the era of globalization. The courses I teach deal with this movement in different contexts: along the Silk Road, between different cultures and religions, inside China and outside. And in research, more than archives, I like to deal with what is happening in the world itself, encounters with people fascinate me. And so, my most essential research and collaborations happen in the field, during the ethnographic work with missionaries and local Christians in southwest China, with visitors and students at the center for studying traditional Tibetan painting, and recently, among the Bnei Mansheh community, here in Israel. In the academic field, I created collaborations with researchers of Chinese Christianity at Yale University and with other researchers dealing with contemporary religion in Israel. My ambition is to continue deepening my view of society in China as well as the developing connections between Israel and Judaism and the conceptual worlds of East Asia.

Today, we are exposed to a great deal of information and do not always manage to understand and digest it, especially in a demanding and competitive and very fast world. Studying the humanities gives their students something from the experience of humanity: tools for observing the world around them beyond the everyday circumstances, an ability to recognize deep processes, and ultimately, a better ability to direct their lives based on knowledge and from choice. Within the Faculty of Humanities, our department at Bar-Ilan University is unique in that its members deal with contemporary Asia from diverse angles and diverse and relevant aspects and with a personal concern for its male and female students. In my fields, and thanks to the field work, both the students and anyone who works in China or East Asia, anyone who visits there in professional, diplomatic, business or academic contexts, and all those who are interested and observe the culture, customs and behavior of individuals and society in this region, can find in my research a source of practical and applicable information To understand the reality around them and to act correctly in this reality. I try to present a broad picture and provide tools for a deep historical and conceptual understanding of the reality in today's China.

Alongside my doctoral thesis which dealt with the relationship between missionaries, ethnicity and state control in the Yunnan province of China, a province that has undergone a process of globalization, I will mention some other studies that I conducted, "The socio-economic ethos of the commandments that depend on the land: sovereignty, ownership and property in the light of the commandments of the year of jubilee, conducted with the support of the center Tchar-Palm Beach for Social Sciences in the Jewish Perspective (2022); "Living from India and from Africa in Judea and Samaria: an ethnographic study", with Prof. Miriam Billig and with the support of the Ariel University Research and Development Authority (2021); "Tourists and Pilgrims in the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron", with Prof. Miriam Billig, and with the support of the Ariel University Research and Development Authority (2020); "Christian Zionism in Judea and Samaria", with Prof. Miriam Billig, with the support of the Ministry of Science (2019).
