one of a handful of Bar-Ilan University faculty members on a special track for artists. An award-winning novelist and translator of Hebrew prose, Prof. Fallenberg is the author of three novels – all published in New York, in English – and the translator of Israeli novels by Meir Shalev, Batya Gur, Ron Leshem, Alon Hilu, Yair Lapid and many others. In recent years his focus has shifted to staged works, including the plays of Hanoch Levin and Gilad Evron, operas by Jonatan Levi and Lior Navok, and scripts for television and film by popular writers like Adir Miller and Reshef Levi and the series "Homeland."
At Bar-Ilan University, Prof. Fallenberg heads the fiction track for students pursuing their MA in creative writing, and he initiated the track for literary translation, which has already served students translating from twenty different languages into English.
Prof. Fallenberg is the recent recipient of a Bogliasco Foundation Fellowship, awarded to “individuals of all ages and nationalities who have made significant contributions in the arts and humanities” for which he will spend a month-long writing residency in Italy in 2021. Previous writing fellowships include Macdowell and Vermont Studio Center (US); Château de Lavigny (Switzerland); Banff Arts Centre (Canada); Sun Yat-sen University (China); and Gröndalshús/Icelandic Writers Union (Iceland).
In 2016, Prof. Fallenberg, with his son Micha, opened Arabesque, an arts and residency center in the Old City of Akko, which functions both as a small boutique hotel and an artists’ residency on the model of those at which he himself has been a guest. Plans to expand the residency program – presently on hold due to the global pandemic – call for hosting up to 24 artists per year from around the world and from within the various communities and populations of Israel.
Evan Fallenberg is the author of two novels – Light Fell (Soho Press, 2008) and When We Danced on Water (HarperCollins, 2011) – and translator of books (by Ron Leshem, Batya Gur, Alon Hilu, Yair Lapid, Meir Shalev and others); scripts for film and television (Adir Miller, Reshef Levi, Savi Gabizon); and stage plays (Gilad Evron, Lior Navok).Fallenberg has won or been shortlisted for many prizes, including an American Library Association Award for Literature and the PEN Translation Prize. He is coordinator of literary translation and fiction in the Department of English Literature at Bar-Ilan University and for five years was a guest faculty member of the low-residency MFA program in creative writing at City University of Hong Kong.
