About Me

Professor Elie Holzer; Head of the R. Dr. Ochs Chair for Teaching Religious Studies I am a practice-oriented philosopher of Jewish education who specializes in Jewish thought and in philosophical hermeneutics on the basis of which I explore and design pedagogical implications for Jewish learning and more broadly for a post-critical religious Judaism. My current areas of research are: The intellectual, ethical and spiritual dimensions of havruta (paired) text study; Poiesis and the hermeneutics of Otherness & Self in the teaching and learning of Hasidic homilies; Hermeneutics and spiritual pedagogies of nigun (Jewish religious song or tune).
