About Me

Prof. Basilius Bawardi is a senior lecturer at Bar-Ilan University. He is specialized in modern Arabic literature and literary genres in the nineteenth century. As well, Dr. Bawardi studies the relationship between literature, and national, religious, and social ideologies. In addition, he is working on the study of the Arab detective literature from the end of the nineteenth century until recent decades. Bawardi also examines the teaching processes of Arabic language and curricula of the Palestinian Arab minority in Israel. His book The Lebanese-Phoenician Nationalist Movement: Literature, Language and Identity ,(Tauris-London) will be published in June 2016. AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION:1. Modern Arabic literature. 3. The Ideological text: The relationship between ideological streams and the formation of the Modern Arabic literature, The Phoenician, Syrian, and Arab nationality streams.
4. Publication of central magazines in Arab world and its influence on the development of Modern Arabic literature.
5. The formation and development of genres in Modern Arabic literature (19th & 20th centuries).
6. The development of modern Arabic narrative fiction in 19th century.
7. Western – Arab encounter and its influence on modern Arabic literary text. 
8. Arabic detective writing and narrative.
