Personal profile

About Me

Associate professor at the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine. Ph.D. in Genetics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Postdoctoral studies at the University of California, San Diego. Research interests include the structure and function of the cell nucleus, with an emphasis on the Nuclear Pore Complex (NPC) and a group of human diseases known as nuclear envelopathies. The NPC serves as a portal for the selective exchange of macromolecules between the nucleus and cytoplasm.

Research Area

  • Nuclear Structure & Function

Laboratory

Prof. Amnon Harel is Head of International Study Programs and head of the Nuclear Structure and Function Lab.

Research in the laboratory focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying NPC biogenesis, the translocation of different cargoes through the central pore channel and developing new techniques for imaging various cellular structures by scanning electron microscopy. Recent work in Prof. Harel's lab has revealed specific mutations in human nuclear envelope and NPC components that cause severe neurodegenerative conditions.
