Cooperative Development Initiative – Created by CDI Systems in partnership with the Saul Lieberman Institute of Talmudic Research of the Jewish Theological Seminary and Bar Ilan University’s Institute for Computeriza¬tion in Jewish Life.
This new resource upgrades and integrates the three Judaic studies databases developed by these institutions:
- The Sol and Evelyn Henkind Talmud Text Databank.
- The Index of References Dealing with Talmudic Literature, offering pinpointed citations from hundreds of classic and modern scholarly works directly related to the specific selected passage within Talmudic literature.
- Primary Textual Witnesses to Tannaitic Literature.
Creating this new platform for the integrated database gave us the opportunity to present a number of new and exciting features, opening new horizons and radically altering the old methods of searching and accessing materials serving research and study.
- Sophisticated full text combined search functions allowing you to find any word in any of the textual witnesses of the Babylonian Talmud and the Tosefta all in one search.
- The Tosefta is accessed by specific chapter and section (halakha) .
- An Index of pinpointed bibliographic references is listed for the specific chapter and paragraph (mishna or halakha) in the Mishna and Tosefta and for the folio number and side (daf/amud) in the Babylonian Talmud.
- The Index of references is accessed from any passage found by search or selected by browsing.
- All citations listed by the Index of References include an icon linking the full bibliographic information page at the National Library of Israel.
- A second Index icon connects directly to the online full text or searchable format of the book, when available.
- High resolution digital images from all pre-Bomberg first prints of the Talmud (Soncino and Pesaro) have been added to the databank.
- Piecing together once connected texts from the scattered Cairo Geniza manuscript fragments thus reconstructing text from the original manuscripts. These reconstructions "joins" are marked by the tractate name and a G followed by the corresponding Sussman catalogue number.
- Fully arranged word-by-word synoptic comparison of all the textual witnesses presented for chapters of the Babylonian Talmud. With this “partiture” synopsis all of the relevant information is readily available to you and the relations between witnesses are easily mapped. A unique icon in the browse tree links to these excel files which are being uploaded to the site gradually.
