Institute of Superconductivity and National Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements

The "Institute of Superconductivity" was established by Bar-Ilan University “in recognition of the potential benefits to be obtained from research in the field of high-temperature superconductivity and in view of the central role played by its researchers in this developing field”. In this Institute, experimental and theoretical efforts are coordinated within one organizational framework, thus enabling the various groups in the Department of Physics to conduct long-term, methodical studies aimed towards a breakthrough in this field.

The Head of the Institute, Prof. Yosef Yeshurun, is also Director of the National Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements at Bar-Ilan University. Most of the activity at Yeshurun’s lab is dedicated to experimental studies of magneto-transport properties of superconductors, focusing on the behavior of these materials in the nano-scale. Application-oriented studies in the laboratory focus on high-current applications and energy storage.

The Bar-Ilan Institute of Superconductivity has received an impressive number of national and international distinctions and research grants from the Israel Science Foundation (ISF), the United-States/Israel Bi-National Science Foundation (BSF), the German-Israel Foundation (GIF), German-Israeli Project Cooperation (DIP), Ministry of National Infrastructures, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Commerce and other governmental bodies and Foundations.

Below is a selected list of past and present research grants.

In 1992 Yeshurun’s lab was recognized as a National Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements by the Israel Academy for Science and Humanities and by Israel's Ministry of Science and Arts. This Laboratory is today part of the Institute of Superconductivity.
The Institute was awarded the title of Minerva Center for Superconductivity (1993 - 2008) - by the Minerva Association in Germany – together with G. Deutscher, Tel-Aviv University, and G. Koren, the Technion.
The Institute was awarded the title of Center of Excellence for Superconductivity (1995 - 1999) - by the Israeli Academy for Science and Humanities – together with G. Deutscher, Tel-Aviv University, and G. Koren, the Technion.
The Institute was awarded the title of Center of Excellence for Local Magnetic Measurements (1999 - 2007) - by the Israeli Academy for Science and Humanities (ISF) – together with E. Zeldov, the Weizmann Institute.
The Institute was awarded a German-Israeli Project Cooperation (DIP) on “Nanostructured hybrids of superconductors and ferromagnets” (2010 – 2014) - by the German Ministry for Education and Science (BMBF) – together with G. Koern, the Technion, O. Millo, the Hebrew University, and P. Leiderer, E. Scheer and J. Demsar, the University of Konstanz.
Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements

The Laboratory for Magnetic Measurements at Bar-Ilan University, headed by Prof. Yosef Yeshurun, is today part of the Institute of Superconductivity. Most of the activity at this laboratory is dedicated to experimental studies of magnetic properties of superconductors, in particular to vortex matter properties, and to studies of the quantum properties of these materials at the nano-scale. Application-oriented studies in the laboratory focus on high-current applications such as superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) and Fault Current Limiter (FCL). The lab was also engaged in developing mini-size Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (m-TMS) and in characterizing magnetic nanoparticles.
