Description

Migration and Mobility in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages Fellowship - University of Tübingen

Center for Advanced Studies "Migration and Mobility in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages"; The proposed project will consider the migration and mobility of heresiological terminology into early medieval sources from Gaul and Spain (ca. 500-800). It will seek to establish the assertion that, in early medieval western sources, heresiological terminology was used in ways that often corresponded very partially to the theologies originally connoted by the terms employed. Heresies, even very remote or obscure ones, could be removed from their historical context and expediently adapted and repurposed to suit a range of new historical settings. In this sense, heresiology did, in fact, migrate and the ways in which it was construed were subject to mobility.
