Description

The Book of Esther, with its dramatic plot, carnivalesque spirit, and unlikely heroes has resonated across cultures and centuries. From early rabbinic commentaries, through medieval adaptations, to Renaissance and Baroque art and Victorian literature and in myriad points of reception in between, the Book of Esther has continually inspired (and discomfited) artists, writers and interpreters engaging with its enduring themes of exile, identity, female agency, courage, and resistance. Today, popular and graphic novels, films, and performance art continue to draw on the iconic biblical story, while scholarly interest in the book and its afterlives has seen a steep rise, proving that its resonance is as timeless as its themes. But how has its meaning and significance changed through the kaleidoscope of history?
This one-day conference explores the enduring legacy of the Book of Esther in literature and art of all ages and places, examining its diverse interpretations and evolving reception.
