Investigating animal painting in medieval sources, scholars usually refer to the type of animal, the features attributed to it in texts dating back to antiquity, and their moral messages in medieval books, such as Bestiaries. In the current paper, I argue that an investigation of the emotional state of the painted animal may add nuances and subcategories to this formal symbolic classification.
